NewsJazz/blues quartet on tap for La Sierra performance10:00 PM PDT on Thursday, July 8, 2010The Press-Enterprise Podcast: Jazz/blues quartet on tap for La Sierra performance The John Payne Quartet, which features a mix of jazz and blues musicians, will perform Wednesday at the Alumni Center of La Sierra University in Riverside. It's part of the Pierce Street Jazz concert that begins at 7 p.m. at the center, 11500 Pierce St. Admission is free. The quartet includes Payne on guitar, Theo Saunders on piano, Putter Smith on upright bass and Kendall Kay on drums. Organizers say the Pierce Street Jazz program began last fall with quartets organized by bassist Henry Franklin. He has performed in jazz combos for many years at Riverside's Mission Inn. ![]() Guitarist John Payne, of Santa Barbara, says he was influenced by jazz and blues greats Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Kenny Burell and Long John Hunter, among others. Payne studied jazz with Bob Brown in Albuquerque, N.M. According to the event organizers, Payne was influenced by jazz guitar greats Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Kenny Burell as well as by blues artist Long John Hunter and others. For the past 24 years, Payne has lived in Santa Barbara where he divides his time between playing and teaching. He has played with Randy Tico, Bob Ledner, Lorca Hart and many others. He is currently performing duets with Loren Monda. The Pierce Street Jazz concert will reunite Payne and pianist Saunders, who performed together in past years.
